GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter has soft opened its doors once again for its community.
Following an isolated case of canine-parvo virus in late May, the shelter entered a quarantine stage, temporarily shutting off a majority of its services to the public. In the weeks since, UPAWS says all puppies in the affected litter have tested negative and are doing well.
Beginning Tuesday, June 16, they’re allowing most services to cats and small critters, until the shelter fully reopens Tuesday, June 23.
“We’ve deep cleaned the entire building, and we’re just going to slowly acclimate to opening next week,” said UPAWS Shelter Manager, Ryan McLaren. “We all worked really well together to keep it from spreading, I’m proud of everyone for being able to save all the puppies.”
Over the next several days, staff will continue extensive sanitization efforts throughout the facility in preparation for reopening. UPAWS says it extends its gratitude to the community for its patience and support through the difficult downtime.
