M.D.A.R.D. says never to move firewood

The Michigan DNR and MDARD are reminding campers and travelers to buy firewood at or near their destination.

Burn firewood close to where you get it

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A campfire is a Labor Day weekend tradition for many Michigan families, but before loading up the truck with firewood, state officials say. There’s one thing you should be aware of: “Firewood can house insect pests and diseases that can be spread by moving firewood from one location to another,” said Lindsay Patrick, MDARD Invasive Species Coordinator.

The Michigan DNR and MDARD are reminding campers and travelers to buy firewood at or near their destination. Rather than bringing it from home. “That’s because firewood can carry invasive insects and plant diseases hundreds of miles,” said Patrick.

Officials say more than 140 pests and diseases can hitch a ride in untreated wood. “The rule of thumb is not to move firewood more than 10 miles from the origin of where you get the firewood,” reminded Patrick.

Some, including the hemlock woolly adelgid, Asian longhorn beetle, and oak wilt, can be difficult to spot, and once they become established, they can be extremely difficult or impossible to eradicate.

“When the adult emerges, it can go out and fly to other trees. Healthy trees and infest them. And that’s a way that a lot of these insect pests spread,” said Patrick.

State officials are also working to make certified firewood more readily available by helping producers and suppliers join Michigan’s invasive-free firewood certification program.

“It kills the insects and the disease within the firewood and makes it safe to be transported,” said Patrick.

Officials say taking this simple step can help protect Michigan’s forests and outdoor recreation areas for years to come.
