K.I. SAWYER, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership is off to a busy summer season. On Tuesday afternoon, nine delegates took off for a 10-day trip to Kajaani, Finland, one of the area’s two Sister Cities.
Delegation Leader Randy Jensen says for over half of the 2026 delegates, it should be quite a new experience.
“Four of us have been to Finland before, but not everybody has been to Kajaani,” he explained. “Several of the other people have never even been to Finland.”
During their 10 day trip, the group will be set with host families to experience a home life in Finland. The trip will stay busy each day, learning about local and regional history, while visiting with all mayors in the Kainuu Region, where Kajaani is the capital of.
They’ve also been able to plan the trip at a special time of year.
“We’ll be there for the summer solstice which is huge in Scandanavia, so we’ll have a big Juhannus celebration,” said Jensen.
The delegates will return to Marquette on June 26, and plan to hold a public information meeting about the trip later this summer. Updates throughout the trip may be found on the Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership Facebook page or at mqtsistercity.org.
