FORD RIVER, Mich. (WZMQ) – A local nonprofit is honoring the country’s veterans and active-duty service members with a special display.
In 2023, the Ford River Lions Club set out to transform the triangle of land across from the Ford River Pub on M-35. The previously empty lot now welcomes visitors to town with signs, a pergola, benches, and a free little library.
Now, the Lions Club has also added a monument dedicated to those who have served in America’s military. It depicts the various branches of service, along with a quote by William Safire that reads, “When duty calls, that is when character counts.”
“The monument serves as a lasting tribute to our veterans and a reminder of the sacrifices they have made for our freedom,” said Lions Club member Jayne Church. “A lot of the members of our club out here in Ford River—as sure as anywhere—are veterans, so I think this means a lot to them. A lot of small towns have monuments honoring them, and not just a memorial, but the ones who have served. It’s just a place they can come and remember and to say, ‘Thanks for all you’ve done.'”
Church says the triangle beautification project has been a community-wide effort.
“Fundraising efforts, generous donations from local businesses and organizations, and the dedication of a small group of volunteers who donated countless hours to make this project become a reality,” she said. “Their commitment helped turn an unused piece of property into something the entire community can be proud of.”
The Lions will hold a public dedication ceremony for the veterans monument on Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be followed by a community potluck at the clubhouse, located at 3764 L.15 Lane. For full event details, click here.
