LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is recommending residents and visitors to avoid foam found on surface water.
As summer approaches, be on the lookout for any white, off-colored or brown foam that tends to pile up in bays, inland lakes, and river barriers. These build-ups can contain harmful chemicals and bacteria, including high levels of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which has been linked to harmful health effects.
Skin is typically a good barrier for PFAS, but if you come into contact be sure to practice cautionary hygiene.
“We recommend to rinse it off as soon as possible and bathe or shower after swimming,” said MDHHS Toxicologist, Chelsea Gary. “Be sure to wash your hands before preparing food, eating or putting hands in your mouth.”
