MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – After extensive storm damage this winter, Cinder Pond Marina has been repaired and is open for the season.
Ice buildup beginning as early as December had left serious damage to several of its piers, splitting electrical lines to its fueling dock and cutting power to the marina’s bubbler system, causing more ice buildup to occur over the next few months.
Through the spring, an insurance claim was able to cover the necessary repairs, allowing the marina to open this past weekend.
“We had to essentially go through and repair all of the piers with new electrical and plumbing,” explained Andrew MacIver, Asst. Director of Community Services for the City of Marquette. “We had a couple of breaks in our fuel dock and pier 3 split in a couple of places, so we had to float everything back and re-anchor them to the lake bottom.”
All services are available at the marina except on pier 3, until its water systems are up and running soon.
The City of Marquette says they’ve received a waterways grant from the Michigan DNR to fully rebuild all of the docks at the marina in 2027.
