NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Negaunee has received a $50,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to improve its future of roadway safety.
The Pre-Development Accelerator Program grant will cover the engineering costs of a few upcoming transportation projects. A major focus will be to strengthen the underground utilities in its proposed roundabout project at the crossing of US-41 and Teal Lake Avenue, scheduled for 2031.
“We want to make sure those water and sewer utilities are in sound shape before the roundabout comes in because we don’t want to be digging up a brand new roundabout after its built,” said Negaunee City Manager, Nate Heffron.
The grant will also be used for a feasibility study on the proposal of installing a pedestrian tunnel under the Teal Lake Avenue railroad trestle.
“Right now, we don’t even have a separation from the road, so we’re looking to try and increase the safety of this area a bit and make it more comfortable to get through here,” said Heffron.
Questions on either future project can be directed to the city manager’s office at (906) 475-7700, ext. 11.
