NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Several Negaunee football players made a big impact Wednesday afternoon in preparation for a Pioneer Days event held on Thursday.
Thousands of hard covers and paperback book are made available at the annual Pioneer Days book sale. These are transferred from the library to the senior center in close to two hundred boxes.
For over 10 years, this has all been made possible by the help of players from the high school football team. This year, more of that help has come through from the middle school team, bringing a sense of pride through both programs.
“They know that they’re fulfilling a service for the community, because the books probably wouldn’t get there if it wasn’t for the kids,” said Jeff Niemi, high school head coach.
“Getting the middle schoolers involved is better for the environment of the team,” said High School Quarterback, Kyle Waterman. “Last year took us two and a half hours, but now that we got the young guys it went by in about thirty minutes.”
The book sale will take place tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. The teams will then move all of the remaining items back up to the library.
