MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Congressional hopeful Callie Barr, along with former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley, were in Marquette Friday for a community forum about growing concerns over the future of the Social Security Administration.
“The challenges that this program faces are solvable challenges. There’s no reason why we should cut its staff to a 60-year low. We can fix that,” said former Social Security Commissioner, Martin o’malley.
During the forum at the Peter White Public Library, O’Malley said recent reductions at the agency could lead to major disruptions, and interruptions in benefits are possible if staffing reductions continue.
O’Malley says social security has long been a lifeline for seniors and people with disabilities and should be protected.
Meanwhile, Carrie Barr says many beneficiaries in the U.P. rely on monthly checks to cover basic needs and are worried about any threat to the program.
