NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Voters in Negaunee have approved a bond proposal to save the Negaunee ice arena.
The vote was 747 votes to approve the bond, versus 309 votes against.
The approved bond allows the city to borrow up to 1,25 million dollars to make vital repairs to the ice-making equipment, as well as improve locker rooms and the parking lot.
City leaders say the investment will support youth hockey, figure skating, and community events, all while preserving a key local gathering space.
“The folks in Negaunee always come out to support the youth. They come out to support worthy causes, and I think tonight just proves that they felt there was worth in this facility. They want to make sure these programs are around for these kids and other community members in the area, and want to make sure this ice arena stays around for another 40 years,” said Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron.
Heffron says the work on the arena can begin within weeks, with most of the repairs being completed in time for next season’s hockey season.
