ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – A new nonprofit is opening soon in Escanaba. This weekend, the public is invited to see what it’s all about.
Formerly a memory care facility on 1st Avenue South, the Gary Abrahamson, Jr. Music, Arts and Life Enrichment Center is designed to be a creative gathering space. Community members will fight isolation through singing, playing instruments, creating artwork, and cooking.
“A lot of this is going to be very small group to encourage people who don’t want to be part of something too big but are spending a lot of time alone,” explained Mary Whitmer, Board President of the nonprofit. “We hope to build community and build socialization skills.”
The center will host an informational open house on Sunday, May 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer applications will be available for anyone interested in getting involved in the nonprofit’s mission.
The Gary Abrahamson, Jr. Music, Arts and Life Enrichment Center is now offering Acoustic Social Jam sessions on the first Friday of each month from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The board hopes to be fully operational by late summer. Whitmer says they would also like to launch mommy and me events, social activities for senior citizens, and other unique gatherings.
“The underlying message here of trying to bring more love and care into people’s lives is the ultimate goal here,” Whitmer said, “that people can feel more connected to each other as human beings.”
