MUNISING, Mich. (WZMQ) – A house fire in Munising claimed the life of a young child Thursday evening.
At approximately 5:45 p.m., Alger County Dispatch received a call about a structure fire on the 600 block of Superior Street. The Munising City Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 5:47 p.m., along with the Munising Township Fire Department. The City Fire Department quickly arrived with multiple engines to find the house fully engulfed. The Au Train Township and Rock River Township Fire Departments were dispatched for mutual aid.
The fire resulted in the death of a three-year-old child who lived in the home. According to the Alger County Public Information Officer, the family has been notified, but names are not being released.
In addition to the fire department, officers from the Munising City Police Department, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, the Michigan State Police, and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the scene. Emergency services cleared the scene after 11:00 p.m.
Officials ask the public to be respectful in the wake of the tragedy.
