MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Nearly half a million dollars in federal funding is coming to Marquette for a new multi-use pathway.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced a TAP grant of just over $482,000 for a Wilson Street multi-use path extension. The path will connect residential neighborhoods, senior citizen housing, grocery stores, and the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
The project is expected to break ground in early summer of 2027.
City Engineer Mikael Kilpela says the project has been in the plans for years. “It meets the goals of the city as far as being a walkable community,” says Kilpela. “It’s been a part of our community master plan, the active transportation plan, as far as being a future corridor for a multi-use pathway.”
Munising also received a TAP grant through the same annoucement. Over $900,000 for both sidewalk and crosswalk improvements around their schools. Combined, the two U.P. communities are receiving nearly 1.4 million dollars in federal transportation funding.
