LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced that the Department of Attorney General has begun managing and supporting prosecutorial functions in Luce County. The department’s involvement follows the appointment of former Luce County Prosecutor Thomas Evans as the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney.
After consultation with the staff at the Luce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the district court bench, the department began assisting with cases on October 14th. These efforts have been possible through close collaboration with local authorities and the allocation of state resources to sustain prosecutorial efforts.
“Protecting public safety and securing justice requires uninterrupted prosecution,” Nessel said. “I am relieved that the new state budget gives my office the resources needed to step in and support local prosecutor’s offices to maintain critical services when vacancies arise. We are committed to ensuring that the people of Luce County experience no disruption during this transition period.”
Under Attorney General Nessel, the department began offering assistance and significant resources to help local prosecutor’s offices manage their caseloads during vacancies. The department has previously provided assistance to Houghton, Lake, and Ontonagon counties during similar vacancies. The department will continue to support prosecutorial functions in Luce County until the prosecuting attorney vacancy is filled.
