ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This Giving Tuesday, the Escanaba City Band and Bay College are teaming up for a night of charity and holiday spirit.

On December 3, the band will perform a free concert of Christmas classics in the Besse Theater. In place of admission, guests are asked to bring a donation for one of several local nonprofits and organizations that will be set up outside the theater.

Participating organizations include the Salvation Army, Warm Coats for Warm Hearts, and the Bay College Food Pantry. The Escanaba City Band and Bay College are excited to invite the community to this third annual evening of helping those in need.

“Our first year we thought, ‘This would be cool to really do something in conjunction with Bay College,'” said City Band Director Bruce Cassell. “It worked so well the first time, we thought, ‘Let’s just keep doing it.’ It’s a good tradition to start, and it’s just fun every year after summer’s over and we get a little break just to get back together and play some Christmas music for the holidays.”

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the City Band will perform at 7:00 p.m. Click here for more information.

The amount of families in the up experiencing homelessness is growing at an alarming rate. Until now, there hasn't been a homeless shelter in Marquette County just for families. In response, room at the inn is about to open such a place. Executive Director Chelsea Wilkinson says the need is out there. Over the last year and a half or so have seen a really alarming increase in families who are not fleeing domestic violence, and who are experiencing homelessness. And unfortunately, the closest family shelter to here is in Menominee. You've got single-parent households or even two-parent households that just really can't afford rent anymore. And so we want to make sure that there is a safety net for those families.
