When and where to light off your fireworks this season

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – People are already starting to load up on fireworks as they prepare for next week’s celebrations.

Most cities go along with Michigan’s state law, meaning private fireworks can be set off starting this Saturday, June 29. They’re allowed to be set off from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Usually the window would close after July 4, but with Independence Day being on a Friday, fireworks can be launched on July 5 as well.

In Marquette, police will typically begin with a warning to those lighting fireworks outside normal hours. “If it’s gone beyond that, or we’ve already given a warning, the officers do have the discretion to confiscate fireworks that are on hand, and you could get a ticket with up to a $1,000 fine,” said Cpt. James Finkbeiner of the Marquette City Police Department.

In Marquette, it’s also illegal to light off fireworks on any public property. Cpt. Finkbeiner is urging the public to refrain from bringing their own fireworks to the Lower Harbor this year.
