Whitmer visits Biden-Harris Administration to advocate for more funding

by Sophia Murphy

WASHINGTON, DC. — Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer will be in Washington, D.C. with a goal of bringing more federal resources home to Michigan. During the two-day visit, the governor will meet with high-level officials in the Biden administration to pitch Michigan for additional investment in economic and workforce development, innovation, and cross-border cooperation. The State of Michigan has already secured more than $12.4 billion of federal investments and the private sector has contributed $28 billion in commitments to the state.

“Michigan is competing for every federal resource and dollar so we can build on our economic momentum, including the more than $12.4 billion of direct investments the Biden-Harris administration has already made in our state,” said Governor Whitmer. “This week, I’m in DC to meet with leaders in the administration to advocate for Michigan and talk about several key priorities ranging from economic development to land conservation. I am excited to work with allies in our congressional delegation and my cabinet to win more investments, create more jobs, and revitalize more communities back home in Michigan. Let’s keep telling our story and working together to get stuff done.”

While in Washington, the governor will meet with the Department of Defense to discuss Michigan’s Uncrewed Tripled Challenge, an autonomous drone competition challenging teams of academics and industry innovators to carry a payload over air land and water across the state’s northern Lower Peninsula and will work to secure Department of Defense officials’ participation in the event.

Governor Whitmer will also visit the Department of the Interior to advocate for the Keweenaw Peninsula to be designated as Michigan’s second-ever National Heritage Area, highlighting state and local efforts around land conservation in the area, as well as the area’s historical heritage in copper and its lasting impact on the region’s tourism and education industries. National Heritage Areas are places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape, and unleash hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal investment.

Additional announcements will be made in the coming days.

As Governor Whitmer embarks on this critical mission to Washington, D.C. she aims to solidify Michigan’s position as a leader in innovation and economic growth. The initiatives discussed during this visit will pave the way for sustainable development and job creation across the state. Together with federal partners, Michigan is set to transform these strategic plans into concrete achievements that will benefit all Michiganders.

The governor will also meet with other leaders in the administration alongside the State of Michigan and private sector partners.

Biden-Harris Administration Investments in Michigan

  • The administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has announced $10.5 billion of investments in Michigan for 559 projects including:
  • $4.6 billion to fix the damn roads and bridges
  • $2.2 billion for high-speed internet
  • $783 million for ports and waterways
  • $686.1 million for clean water
  • Under the administration, private companies have announced $28 billion of investment commitments in Michigan, including:
  • $23.9 billion in electric vehicles and batteries
  • $2 billion in clean power
  • $1 billion in clean energy manufacturing and infrastructure
  • $756 million in semiconductors and electronics
  • $300 million in heavy industry
