Iron Mountain High School seniors encourage blood donations

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – Iron Mountain High School’s Tri-Hi-Y Club orchestrated a vital community event today: a blood drive aimed at bolstering the local blood supply.

With a history spanning over three decades, the Tri-Hi-Y Club has been a force in organizing approximately 3 blood drives each year, accessible not only to students but also to the wider public. Recognized as one of the top contributors, the school’s dedication to this cause has been lauded by the club’s advisor.

“Our small donation makes a big impact in our community,” shared Hailey Greenleaf, a dedicated member of the Tri-Hi-Y Club. “Blood’s needed. It’s needed, and for us, it’s a good incentive to get a red cord.”

Her sentiments were echoed by Lucas Kassin, another senior at Iron Mountain High, who emphasized the life-saving potential of their contributions. “Yeah, up to three lives,” he confirmed.

The event not only aims to replenish the blood bank but also rewards participants through the Red Cord Program. This initiative, integral to the school’s ethos, awards a red cord to graduating students who have either donated 5 units of blood or had someone donate in their name to reach the target quantity.

Reflecting on the significance of the program, Greenleaf urged participation: “During your high school career, you can donate if you donate 5 units or have someone donate in your name.”

Kassin, having donated consistently since the age of 16, expressed pride in his contributions: “So far, I’ve been able to help myself and 3 of my classmates get their red cords.”

Looking ahead, the next blood drive is slated for May 13th at Our Savior Lutheran Church. The dive will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Central time.

Medical professionals onsite stressed the current need for all blood types, emphasizing the impact of such initiatives on local healthcare.
