CALUMET, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Calumet man after a standoff on Tuesday.
Around 4:45 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a reported fire in the roadway at 25319 West Pine Street. According to the initial report, nails had been intentionally scattered across the road.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the home’s male occupant, who locked himself in the garage and refused deputies’ commands. He then exited the garage carrying a knife, still refusing deputies’ commands.
While inside the home, the man was seen pointing a firearm at a deputy. Deputies secured a perimeter around the house while officials obtained an arrest warrant and search warrant.
The Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was activated to assist. While the team was serving the search warrant, the man exited the house and threw large knives at the team’s vehicle. He then retreated back into the house. After a short time, he exited the house and was taken into custody without further incident.
The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Keweenaw County S.O., the Laurium Police Department, detectives from UPSET West, the Houghton County Road Commission, MDOT, Mercy Ambulance, and Calumet Fire.
