ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The reconstruction of Downtown Escanaba is nearly complete, much to the relief of local business owners.
In the spring, the second half of a two-year project began on Ludington Street. Crews tore up the old roadway to replace aging sewer lines and update the streetscape. Paving began last week.
“It’s a really good feeling to finally have some asphalt in front of us instead of gravel,” said Sue Parker, owner of Nyman Jewelers and chair of the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority. “This is going to be beautiful down here. We’ve expanded the sidewalks, brand new pavement.”
Although the roadway is still closed to vehicles, a large portion of Ludington Street is now open to foot and bike traffic. To welcome the public back to the downtown, businesses hosted Sidewalk Sales on September 4, with many extending their hours until 8 p.m. Nyman Jewelers offered discounts and buy-two-get-one deals on select items.
As the end of a difficult summer draws near, business owners encourage patrons to come see what’s new downtown while visiting their favorite shops and restaurants.
“I really strongly believe that we’re going to have a very strong fourth quarter coming up to make up for what we may have been down a little bit,” Parker said. “It’s just a welcoming environment for people to come downtown.”
