MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A new exhibit marking one of the U.P.’s darkest chapters officially opened its doors Saturday.
The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center unveiled ‘100 Years of Tears: Barnes-Hecker Mining Disaster’ – a free exhibition on the campus of Northern Michigan University commemorating the 100th anniversary of Michigan’s deadliest mine disaster. The exhibit was originally scheduled to open a week earlier but was delayed due to supply chain issues with display panels. It is now open to the public and will remain on display through April 3rd.
Beaumier Center Director Dan Truckey says the reaction from visitors has made all of the work worth it. “I was just talking to somebody, he said it was amazing. That means a lot because you never know when you’re building something like this, designing it, doing your research, if it’s gonna work,” says Truckey. “When people come in and say ‘wow this blew me away’ it means a lot.”
The exhibition is free and open to the public at 223 Harden Hall on the NMU campus – Monday through Friday eleven to four, and Saturdays noon to four.
