ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Wednesday, the VFW building in Downtown Ishpeming collapsed.
Around 7:30 a.m., emergency crews closed much of the downtown to vehicles and pedestrians. Residents living nearby were evacuated from their homes.
Officials from local police and fire departments responded to the scene. To prevent further damage, utility providers shut off natural gas service to the VFW and surrounding buildings.
Just before 10 a.m., the City announced that residents could return to their homes. However, the area largely remained barricaded while crews continued to work.
WZMQ 19 is working to obtain details on the cause of the collapse and will update this story as official information becomes available.
