ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Mid-October marks the end of the growing season for many farmers around the region. On Wednesday evening, Partridge Creek Farm held a public celebration for its final farm stand of the year.
This summer, the Upper Peninsula saw major heat waves and poor air qualities. Partridge Creek says even with those hurdles, its local support still flourished.
“We feel really lucky and happy to have the community support we’ve had,” said Partridge Creek Farm Co-Executive Director Mary Andronis. “Our farm stand sales this year were roughly twice what they were the previous year.”
Even with the unique summer, it was a good one for squash. The farm says about any given year, the region excels in its root vegetables, a lot of which they’re able to provide to local students.
“We grew a lot of rutabagas this year, and a lot of our root vegetables we grew this year are going into the high school and middle school cafeteria in Ishpeming.”
Celebrating the end of harvest didn’t just focus on selling the last items of the season, the Salvation Army was also able to provide 100 free meals to anyone in attendance at Wednesday’s event.
“We’re really thankful for our partnership with the Salvation Army, this will be the fourth time we’ve partnered with them over the summer,” said Andronis.
Partridge Creek says even at the tail end of this season, there’s no better time to start talking about the next. More information, visit partridgecreekfarm.org.
