Recall of Delta County Commissioner David Moyle will officially be on May ballot

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The recall of at least one Delta County commissioner will officially be on the ballot next May.

The Delta County Citizens for Ethical Leadership have been collecting signatures in support of the recall of Commissioners David Moyle, Bob Barron, and Robert Petersen.

Circulators in Moyle’s district needed a minimum of 666 signatures to get the recall on the ballot. Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki reviewed the signatures, as well as any challenges filed against them. Przewrocki found 697 signatures to be valid.

Delta County Citizens for Ethical Leadership member Kelli Van Ginhoven says she is satisfied with the community’s support for the recall effort.

“I think the overall consensus is that people are excited for change,” Van Ginhoven said. “We feel that we can move forward in a positive light and bring more transparency to the Delta County Board of Commissioners.”

Moyle says he is filing a motion to have some of the signatures thrown out, due to “irregularity or reporting fraud” by one of the petition’s circulators.

“That will be my next step,” he said. “I think it would be prudent that the clerk ask for an opinion based on previous case law that occurred during the 2020 gubernatorial election. If the courts respect the injunction, then they’ll understand what I was seeking to do.”

In the meantime, Moyle says he will continue his work on the County Board of Commissioners in the same manner he always has.

“For me, it’s business as usual,” he said. “I’m just taking care of what I believe I was put in office by the people to do. The whole process, I find, is regretful and is going to be an incredible waste of the people’s money.”

Van Ginhoven is now gearing up for the May election, as she will be running against Moyle for his seat on the County Board of Commissioners.

“I will be running as a Democrat and the Delta County Democratic Party will be submitting a letter for my nomination,” she said. “We can’t wait until May.”

According to Przewrocki, Barron has until November 6 to challenge any of the signatures turned in from his district. Circulators will be turning in the petition for Petersen’s district in the coming days.
