Enrollment is on the rise for Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University’s total enrollment has gone up this fall semester, increasing the student total by 3.3%.

Since Covid hit in 2020, this is the first time that Northern has seen an increase in their enrollment. NMU’s total student count is now at 7,197 with a 9.6% increase in new freshman and 15% increase in new transfers and graduate students. Returning students are also a way that Northern keeps up their enrollment numbers

“When students choose Northern, you know that’s a big commitment,” says Hall spokesman for Northern Michigan University. “It’s up to us to deliver a quality experience, that’s in the classroom with our faculty, but it’s also outside the classroom. What opportunities do our students have?”

Northern also attributed part of their enrollment success to the community, thanking them for creating such a welcoming area, and keeping their students coming back year after year.

“They feel very welcomed in Marquette, their families just rave about the experiences when they come to visit,” says Hall. “That’s a big part of being a Northern Student, and being part of this great campus.”

NMU does realize that with the increase in enrollment, the University will need to adapt. About 3000 beds are available for on campus living, and all of those were filled this year, even before the semester started.

“The housing market in Marquette is pretty tight, that makes our housing availability on campus pretty tight,” says Hall. “So that’s something we’re looking into, what can we do, both on campus and working with folks around town to alleviate that need.”

Northern hopes to continue growing the University, keeping the things that make students want to be a wildcat.
