Delta County Clerk discusses early voting turnout and Election Day expectations

WELLS, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan’s August Primary Election will take place on Tuesday, August 4. Some voters have already taken advantage of opportunities to cast their ballots in advance.

From July 25 through August 2, Delta County residents could vote early at Wells Township Hall. “It’s a little better than it was in August of 2024, but it’s a little bit slower in the summertime—people are busy with vacations and whatever—but that’s the nice thing about early voting,” said Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki. “If you work during the week, you can come on Saturday or Sunday. We just allow for a little more time for people to vote.”

August primaries tend to draw much smaller crowds than general elections in November. However, Przewrocki is expecting a “fairly good” turnout on Election Day, with millages for public services like the Delta Area Transit Authority and the Delta Solid Waste Management Authority on the ballot.

“Then, there’s some races on the top of the ballot,” Przewrocki said, “so we’ll get people out for those races.”

City and township clerks and poll workers have spent weeks training to run their polling locations. They have also conducted extensive testing of the equipment.

“The ballots and the program for the ballots, we receive that,” Przewrocki explained. “All of that is tested against the tabulator to make sure that the election results are exactly what they should be. If there’s an overvote, it catches that. If there’s a cross-party vote, it catches that. All of those things are taken into consideration.”

Voters are asked to come to the polls prepared to ensure a smooth election process.

“Make sure and bring a government-issued photo ID,” said Przewrocki. “A driver’s license works the best, because we can scan that. If they’re registered to vote and they’ve lost their photo ID, they can still come in and vote. We have them sign an affidavit.”

Przewrocki assures voters that they are participating in a secure election, no matter which voting method they have chosen.

“If people vote absent ballot, those ballots are counted on Election Day,” she said. “Every ballot does go through the tabulator, as long as the person is eligible to vote. On Election Day and at early voting, the voter gets to put their own ballot through the tabulator so they know it’s been tabulated. Like I said, we’ve done a lot of testing to make sure that it tabulates the ballots exactly the way they should so every vote is counted.”

WZMQ 19 will provide coverage throughout Election Day on voter turnout and results.
