Iron Mountain, Mich (WZMQ) – The senior wrestling champion from Iron Mountain High School who brought back a state title from Detroit’s Ford Field this year has made a big announcement. After careful consideration of college choices like Lakeland University, Rochester University, Cornerstone University, UW Lacrosse, and Sienna Heights University, the high achieving senior announced his decision.
“Today’s the big day,” said Shawn McGuire, “I’m actually committing. I’m announcing my commitment to Davenport University.” The Iron Mountain High School Senior signed his official letter of intent with the University and has plans to study Urban Education and follow a pre-medical program in the fall. He shared that he would like to one day be a doctor of general family medicine. He is proud to be the first in his family to attend college. He received a package from Davenport with t-shirts and school gear to celebrate the occasion.
“Coach Romero and Coach Lucas are great guys, and I’m happy that I’m going with them,” McGuire added.
McGuire has been wrestling for 9 years, and will be committing to the Division II school starting with the 2023-2024 season for a partial scholarship to wrestle.
He has participated in Askren Wrestling Academy, Ground UP U.S.A., Ares Wrestling Club, and has two state championship titles under his belt. The three-time MHSAA state finalist has two division 4 all state titles, with high academic honors heading into his college career. McGuire made high honor roll for fall of 2022 and honor roll 2023.
