WASHINGTON, D.C. – The midterms were a massacre for Republicans after losing majority control in both chambers. Some Republicans are blaming President Donald Trump for the losses and handing Democrats control of congress.
After the new year, there will be a huge shift of political power in Congress. As Republicans move past Tuesday’s devastating midterms, where they lost both the House and the Senate. Some are reflecting on where they think things went so wrong for Republican candidates.
In a message shared on social media, Vice President JD Vance put it simply: “The reason we lost is the war.”
On Wednesday, the President seemed to agree with that analysis.
“Well, I think it’s largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term and probably that’s probably it’s true,” said the President. “But at the same time, if I had to do it again, I’d have to do it again because long term. It’s the only answer.”
Political scientists said on top of the Iran war, voters were also motivated to go to the polls due to economic hardship, like high costs of living expenses and gas. Other analysis suggests that the President’s hand-picked candidates, who lost in races that were seen as safe bets for Republicans, gave Democrats an opportunity for their candidates to succeed.
Others said the president’s fights with Senator Thom Tillis (R- NC), that essentially led to his retirement; and not supporting Texas Senator John Cornyn’s candidacy, also helped open up those seats for Democrats.
As Republicans try to move forward from this midterm disaster, they will look to see where they can do better ahead of 2028.
“To every American disappointed by tonight’s results, I mean, I’m disappointed too, but we are never discouraged, okay,” said Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R- LA). “Because we live in the greatest nation.”
