NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – It was a big night for Democrats in New York state. From Comptroller to Governor, Democrats swept state-level races.
“My heart is full tonight,” said Attorney General Letitia James. “This victory belongs to each and every one of you.”
“It makes such a big difference when it’s not just a personal victory, but the whole team is winning too,” said Thomas DiNapoli, Comptroller.
Voters re-elected Governor Kathy Hochul. She was facing Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, a Nassau County executive. Hochul told the crowd at the watch party that while they’re celebrating their victories, they still have a lot of work to accomplish.
“Winning an election doesn’t make your rent cheaper or lower your grocery bill,” said Hochul at the event. “It doesn’t make finding affordable childcare easier but that’s what the next four years are for. To finish what we started.”
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D- NY), who leads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which works to elect Democrats to the Senate, shares why she thinks voters supported democrats in New York and beyond.
“My job this cycle was to win the Senate back and we ran authentic, down-to-earth candidates from across this country in red and purple states,” said the Senator. “And because of their authenticity and really focusing on getting costs down, voters responded. They are really upset with President Trump about the war in Iran and the tariffs that are driving up costs with everything else.”
Political scientists said midterms are typically tough on the party in power. Voters overwhelmingly supported Democratic candidates in the midterms, which helped Democrats gain enough seats to flip both the House and the Senate.
