MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette Symphony Orchestra is holding its 2026-27 season opener this weekend at Kaufman Auditorium.
The MSO will begin the performance with two standalone pieces of “Everything Beautiful” by Gala Flagello and “The Montgomery Variations” by Margaret Bonds, before being accompanied by musicians from both Marquette and Negaunee high schools.
These students have the chance to sit side-by-side with a member of the band to perform “Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88” by Antonin Dvorak, a piece they’ve practiced since the spring. Marquette high school students who played in this concert last year say the experience is eye opening and very rewarding.
“It’s a really cool thing to put it all together, and to be able to play that with a professional orchestra is just really awesome,” said Senior Cellist, Vasu Esplin.
“It means a lot to me, it’s one of my favorite concerts of the year,” said Sophomore Violinist, Iris Dohrenwend. “When you’re playing with somebody who’s so passionate about what they’re doing, it really brings the joy of string playing back.”
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. Tickets can be found here.
