MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week is Fire Prevention Week, and local firefighters are taking the message straight to the classroom.
City of Marquette Firefighters visited Superior Hills Elementary School today, walking second and third graders through an inflatable fire safety house detailing escape routes, fire prevention methods, and how to protect yourself in an emergency. Kids also got up close with a real firetruck, exploring the equipment and learning how firefighters’ gear works.
This year’s national Fire Prevention Week theme is ‘Charge into Fire Safety’ – focusing on the dangers of lithium-ion battery fires from devices like phones, e-bikes, and scooters, and how to charge them safely.
Fire Marshall Jeff Fossitt says reaching kids early is the priority. “We target the second and third graders the most, that’s the age in which we come to the schools to teach them and walk them through the fire safety course,” says Fossitt. “We get them familiar with the smoke alarms and a fire escape plan, just the simple things to possibly help them in case of a fire.”
Fire prevention week runs through October 10th. More fire safety tips can be found on at fpw.org
