Trump Calls for “Self-Regulation” on “Super Intelligence” After Meeting with Tech, Leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The people building the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence systems were at the White House Tuesday afternoon.

From the White House to Silicon Valley, the people shaping the future of what President Trump now calls “Super Intelligence” are being called to the same table.

“It’s been officially changed to Super Intelligence or, S.I.,” said Trump, who signed an executive order Tuesday, officially making the switch.

The president, members of the administration and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., met Tuesday afternoon with top executives from OpenAI, Meta, NVIDIA, Anthropic, Google, Amazon and others.

“We had a very, very good meeting, very productive,” said Trump.

The meeting comes as government officials and tech leaders grapple with a growing question: How much control should humans have over systems that are becoming more autonomous?

“There’s going to be a tremendous self-policing aspect,” the president said. “Self-regulation is very important.”

Recent incidents involving AI agents hacking companies and websites have added to the alarm, with some industry figures warning of extreme risks if the technology outpaces safety measures.

However, President Trump has — so far — pushed back on calls to slow the pace of development. However, Trump did allude to some sort of overwatch committee to “keep an eye” on AI advancement. The president has also tasked U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche and the DOJ with pursuing and prosecuting “bad actors” in the realm of AI or SI.

“We’re also thinking about forming a committee of sorts where we put maybe ten people on that committee- it could be from that group- so that the committee can watch over the whole enterprise,” said Trump.

After the meeting, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang agreed with Trump’s outlook on AI and offered a similar, optimistic view of the tech’s potential.

“This is the largest industrial revolution in history,” said Huang. “A million jobs here in the United States. We have chip plants coming up, computer plants coming up and factories coming up. It’s creating just an enormous amount of jobs.”

Other tech leaders, like Anthropic’s Dario Amodei and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have both called for greater oversight after former researchers at their companies issued dire warnings about AI’s development.

“We need one policy for 50 states, not 50 policies for one country,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y. “I don’t want to stifle innovation. I don’t want to do anything that’s going to stop the U.S. from being a superpower. But we do need commonsense regulations.”

Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill say Washington still needs to establish clear rules of the road to prevent inconsistency and prevent the technology from outpacing human control.

Congressman Langworthy said allowing the “titans” of the industry to choose their regulations is not the right path forward.

“I want the U.S. to stay the global superpower, so we can’t overregulate. We have to find common sense, you know, landing spots,” said Rep. Langworthy. “But you also can’t allow just the big titans in the industry to pick the regulations.”
