The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says residents can once again follow normal food safety practices when eating lettuce and salad greens as the state's cyclosporiasis outbreak continues to slow.

MDHHS updates guidelines on Cyclospora outbreak

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says residents can once again follow normal food safety practices when eating lettuce and salad greens as the state’s cyclosporiasis outbreak continues to slow. Health officials say more than 12,400 cases have been reported since June, but new infections and diarrhea-related emergency department visits are declining.

Based on the outbreak’s incubation period, MDHHS believes most exposures happened in late June and early July, and that most contaminated produce is no longer on store shelves.

The department has lifted its recommendation to avoid bagged salad mixes but continues to advise consumers not to eat recalled lettuce products. MDHHS will also reduce its public outbreak updates to once a week, every Thursday.
