MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Wednesday Night Market had plenty of fresh produce and handmade goods this week, but one vendor was offering something a little different.
JJ Brinsky set up his ‘typewritery’ tent on West Washington Street, offering what he calls busking poetry, writing custom poems on a typewriter based on ideas brought to him by passerby. Each poem takes ten to fifteen minutes, and Brinsky also had books and writings among other knick knacks for sale at the table. It’s the sort of vendor you don’t expect to find at a farmers market, and that’s exactly the point for such an event.
Brinsky says the reaction from people who receive a poem is what keeps him coming back. “It’s really cool because I get a lot of response when I’ve written a poem, whether that’s about the word choices I made and how I made those decisions, or even just the surprise of folks receiving a larger chunk of poetry than they thought they’d be getting,” says Brinsky. “It’s something that’s kind of surprising, something that’s personal.”
The Wednesday Night Market runs through August from five to eight P.M. on the 100 block of West Washington Street for those wanting to explore themselves.
