MarqTran looks to renew millage on August 4 ballot

by Andrew Hansz

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Transit Authority is reminding its community of an upcoming millage renewal on next week’s ballot.

Marquette County voters will see a millage request of 0.6 mills per $1,000 of taxable property value to provide sustainable coverage for Marq-Tran from 2027 through 2032. Taxes collected across the first year would be just over $2.1 million, and would allow for continued operations and the ability to implement new, updated systems.

Last year, Marq-Tran reported running over 200,000 fixed route rides and 32,000 door-to-door rides around Marquette County. Marq-Tran Director Bill Geller says without the millage, a majority of operations would have to be cut.

“You may not ride Marq-Tran, but you probably know someone who does ride Marq-Tran and needs its services,” he said. “The millage really does play a big part and without it, we would suffer quite a bit.”

Voters will decide on the renewal on August 4.
