Leaders Gather in Washington to Honor Late Sen. Lindsey Graham

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Leaders from across the globe were in Washington, D.C., Tuesday to pay their respects to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.

The longtime South Carolina Republican died suddenly earlier this month.

Graham was honored during a special ceremony Tuesday morning at the U.S. Capitol building, where family, friends and colleagues gathered to say goodbye.

The 71-year-old had served in the Senate since 2003.

Graham’s Senate colleagues remember him as a devoted lawmaker and an incredibly hard-worker — and one of the leading Republican voices on foreign policy, especially support for Ukraine.

“Senators on both sides of the aisle count him as a friend. And Republicans and Democrats alike, including the Democrat leader, are here to say farewell. Lindsey was a towering figure here in the Senate and on the international stage,” said an emotional Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. “Rest in peace, my friend. I look forward to the days when you make us all laugh again.”

The ceremony at the Capitol was followed by a funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington, where President Trump and several other U.S. and world leaders gathered to say goodbye.

An additional service and a private burial for the late senator will take place in his home state of South Carolina Wednesday.
