The 127th Ishpeming Italian Fest took place over the weekend, with hundreds turning out to celebrate their roots and culture.
Held annually on the last weekend in July, the event takes place at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming.
Formed in 1899, the Italian Beneficial Society originally started the festival and served as a way for those of Italian descent to express their culture. More than 100 years later, the society continues to hold festivals and events for everyone of Italian descent.
This year’s events included live music, a greased pole, and food served by families, along with several food trucks.
Even after a century of existence, the St Rocco St Anthony society of Ishpeming still keeps a tight knit community together, united with festivities on a weekend to remember.
“It’s a great atmosphere, it’s a great community atmosphere” said Tony Beauchamp, a member of the St Rocco St Anthony Italian Fest. “Today, everybody’s Italian. Whether you’re 2% Italian, 90% Italian, or 100%. Everybody’s welcome, everyone’s Italian today.”
The Ishpeming Italian Fest will return next July, on the last weekend of the month.
