BARAGA COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – A former Michigan Department of Corrections corrections officer is being charged with a felony following an incident at Baraga Correctional Facility in which another officer was assaulted.
According to Michigan State Police, it’s alleged that Shelby Pennock, a 44-year-old former corrections officer, opened the cell door of an inmate despite knowing that her actions could result in harm to others. The inmate in the cell immediately exited and physically attacked another corrections officer. During the assault, the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being placed in a headlock and struck multiple times with closed fists to the head and upper body.
Pennock also reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident when the inmate turned and assaulted her as well.
After a coordinated investigation between the MDOC and MSP, the Prosecutor’s Office authorized one felony charge against Pennock for Assault of a Prison Employee. The inmate now faces Assault of a Prison Employee and Prisoner in Possession of a Weapon. Although the inmate remains incarcerated within the MDOC, his arraignment for these charges is still pending.
