MTU promotes Flener to Associate Head Coach

He’s been with the Huskies for four seasons

HOUGHTON, Mich. — After serving as the Michigan Tech assistant men’s basketball coach the previous four seasons, Zach Flener has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, Head Coach Josh Buettner announced on Monday.

During his time as an assistant coach, the Huskies have compiled a 74-52 overall record including back-to-back GLIAC regular season titles in 2024-25 and 2025-26 for the first time in over two decades and back-to-back NCAA appearances highlighted by an Elite Eight run in the 2025-26 season.

“Coach Flener is a rising star in the coaching world,” said Buettner. “He’s been an instrumental part in back-to-back conference championships and an Elite Eight run. He’s a terrific offensive mind that teaches the game extremely well and is tremendous at building relationships with our players.”

The Black & Gold reached new heights during the 2025-26 season, capturing the first Midwest Region Championship in program history and tying the school record for victories with a 29-7 campaign, led by multi-time All-American Marcus Tomashek. The Huskies were a fixture in the national rankings throughout the season, opening at No. 13 in the preseason poll and climbing as high as No. 5 in the fifth regular-season poll.

Defensively, Michigan Tech established itself as one of the nation’s elite teams, ranking among the top-25 all season in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. On offense, the Huskies rewrote the record book on Dec. 20 against Lynn, setting a new program record with 23 three-pointers on 23-of-43 shooting from beyond the arc. Tomashek broke the school record with 11 made three-pointers before Ty Fernholz eclipsed the mark later in the season with 12, setting a new program record.
