HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Houghton has been recognized by the Michigan Green Communities (MGC) program for its environmental leadership.
Recently, the city achieved Gold Status from the Michigan Green Communities challenge for its actions in climate resilience, energy and water management, and community engagement.
Throughout 2025, participating communities logged these actions. For Houghton, it included sustainability practices to improve shorelines in the Portage Canal, and energy reductions within the city.
“It just shows that we are a community that is trying to put our environment first, trying to keep this as healthy, diverse, and resilient as we possibly can,” said Houghton Community and Business Development Manager, Danielle Perkowitz. “It also goes to show how many people live in this area that have a commitment to those values.”
Houghton was one of 68 Michigan communities recognized for these efforts throughout 2025. Four communities achieved Bronze certification, 15 achieved Silver certification, 47 achieved Gold certification, and two achieved Platinum certification.
