ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Friends of the Escanaba Public Library invite the community to celebrate the start of summer on Wednesday, June 10.
At 6 p.m., the Friends will host their annual ice cream social in the library garden. Cupcakes will also be served. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a live performance by the Escanaba City Band.
“The garden has been getting more use, so we did our beautification project,” said Friends of the Escanaba Public Library President Kelly Pepin. “We added plants and mulch, and we’re adding two new benches to the lawn area. We thought we’d spruce it up and make it look nice.”
The event serves as a kickoff to the library’s “Unearth a Story” summer reading program, with registration available to children and teens. It also reminds the public just how much the library has to offer, thanks in large part to the Friends of the Library.
“We are a nonprofit that raises funds to help supplement the library with events and things not in its normal operating budget,” Pepin explained. “We keep the nonfiction current on the shelves, and we do the author series. We promote Ancestry.com, Mango Languages. Inside the library, you can check out fishing poles, baking pans, a telescope, and that was all funded by the Friends of the Library. So many people think it’s just books, and it’s not.”
Before the ice cream social begins, the Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale in the City Hall foyer from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ice cream social will be moved inside.
