MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University has a number of construction projects ongoing this summer, including its two new apartment buildings near the Superior Dome.
The Presque Isle apartment project continues into the summer as two of the largest new additions to campus. NMU Chief Marketing Director Derek Hall says progress is taking quick shape on both sides of the road, even after working through a long winter.
“The [west] building is cranking along, they’re even a bit ahead of schedule,” he said. “They were out here all winter. To see them out here shoveling and keeping this project going was impressive.”
By the fall semester of 2027, both buildings will add a total of 380 beds for upperclassmen in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Hall says housing on this side of the university will bring a fresh angle to students, following years of an increased student body and higher rent prices around town.
“We’ve had more upperclassmen express their desire to stay on campus with the housing crunch in the community, so it makes sense,” he said. “It’s close to third street businesses, the Dome and the PEIF, so that’s a great feature coming to campus and we will fill this building when it opens next year.”
Along with the apartments, campus will be no stranger to new construction projects this summer.
These include major additions to the Harden Hall first floor, a new admissions office in the Northern Center, and the construction of a walking and running track circling the inside perimeter of the Superior Dome.
From June 22 to July 19 the Dome will be closed to the public, and the NMU ticketing office will be temporarily relocated to the Berry Events Center main entrance.
