NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Marquette County has declared a state of emergency ahead of expected flooding in areas of the county. Most notable are areas along the Escanaba, Chocolay, and Menomonee Rivers, with M-35 in the Gwinn area of specific concern.
Marquette County Board Chair Joe Derocha signed the declaration today alongside Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt and Emergency Management Director Brian Hummel. The declaration is a pre-emptive move to make sure essential personnel are in place and that critical resources are available and on stand-by. The measure also put the emergency operations center on alert in case vital roads are affected or cut off by the expected flooding.
“The weather event that is predicted could put an inch of rain into these floodplains, and we certainly want to make sure the public knows that we have safety precautions out there in place,” Said Marquette County Board Chair Joe Derocha.
Sheriff Zyburt reminded everyone in flood-prone areas to monitor Marquette County social media and to quickly heed any warnings or evacuation notices. If you do find yourself in high water, do not attempt to drive through it, as it may contain deep areas that could flood your vehicle.
