Negaunee City Fire Department holds push-in ceremony for new fire engine

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Negaunee City Fire Department has acquired a brand new fire truck, displaying it with the public Monday evening.

The department’s previous frontline engine was over 20 years old and losing certification. Following an equipment millage passed in 2020, the department was able to purchase a 2025 Pierce PUC Pumper, ordered in 2022 at $701,204.00, from Reliant Fire Apparatus of Michigan (formerly Halt Fire, Inc.).

The truck will be the volunteer department’s primary emergency vehicle, able to flow more than 1,500 gallons of water per minute.

“This will upgrade our fleet drastically, it will pretty much go to every call we get,” said Negaunee City Fire Department Captain, Brian Kurin. “Without a dedicated millage, we wouldn’t have been able to buy this equipment.”

To signify its official start of service, members of the department wrapped up the evening with a ‘push-in’ ceremony, by pushing the new truck into its garage to honor the historic station. This was done after each ride with horse-drawn buggies and sleighs in the 1920’s, before the first truck was acquired by the Negaunee Fire Department in 1930.
