Four players combine for 50 kills for Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated Saginaw Valley State 3-1 on Friday at the SDC Gym. The Huskies improved to 11-15 overall and 8-7 in the GLIAC with scores 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, and 26-24.

“We didn’t play our best, but it was an important win tonight,” Tech coach Cindy Pindral said. “Our middles were basically unstoppable, and Maddy Torola had a great match. We need to take care of business again tomorrow. We need to play with more poise and confidence than we did today.”

The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match. The teams battled through 13 ties and seven lead changes in the opening set before Tech closed it out on a 7-2 run. Paige Wagner had five kills in the first, and Brooke Dzwik put down the winner.

In the second, Tech used a 9-0 run to take control and led by as many as 10. Rachel Zurek had six kills, and the Huskies forced the Cardinals into a .075 hitting percentage.

SVSU closed out the third set on an 11-3 run to get back into the match. Five different Cardinals had at least two kills in the third. Madelyn Torola had eight kills for the Huskies.

Tech took the match in the fourth set in extra points. There were 11 ties and six lead changes. SVSU had a setpoint lead before the Huskies reeled off three straight to seal the win. Tricia Kennedy had five kills and hit .625 in the fourth.

Rachel Zurek (14), Madelyn Torola (13), Paige Wagner (13), and Tricia Kennedy all had double-digit kills. Madelynn Kreider set the offense with 44 assists. Julia Fledderjohn (17), Brooke Dzwik (16), Kreider (15), Amelia Albers (11), and Alayna Corwin (10) hit double figures in digs.

The Huskies wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Lake Superior State. Seniors Avery Brown, Alayna Corwin, Brooke Dzwik, Julia Fledderjohn, Meg Raabe, and Makena Wesol will be honored on the court after the match.
