Timms paces Huskies with 17 points

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team led from wire-to-wire and saw three players reach double-figure scoring in the season-opening win over GLVC affiliate Lewis, 68-55, at the D2 Midwest Region Tipoff hosted at the JustAGame Fieldhouse on Friday night.

Senior guard Soraya Timms, in her first game for the Black & Gold since the 2022-23 season, led the Huskies with 17 points and four assists. Alyssa Wypych added 14 points and a team-high nine boards as veteran Janie Tormanen shot six-for-seven from the field for 13 points, adding a team-leading three steals.

“I’m really proud of our team for defending a really good Lewis team well tonight,” said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “Our offense got a little stagnant in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but Alyssa, Soraya and Janie all came up with big plays when we needed them.”

Michigan Tech starts the season 1-0 as Lewis falls to 0-1.

The Huskies led from the opening tip and shot 41.7 percent from the field while winning the rebound battle 25-13, including seven offensive boards in the first half. The Black & Gold jumped out to a 25-11 advantage after the opening period, shooting 61.1 percent from the field while holding the Flyers to 28.6 percent on 4-for-14 shooting.

Timms shot 50 percent (4-8) in the opening half to lead all scorers with nine-points and a team-leading three assists. Sophomore Kloe Zentkowski, junior Alyssa Wypych and sophomore Kendall Standfest had five first-half rebounds, with Zentkowski snagging two off the offensive glass.

The Huskies were outscored 14-13 in the third quarter before winning the fourth quarter 21-18, shooting 70 percent from the field while going five-for-six from the charity stripe.

Yahaira Bueno netted a game-high 21 points for Lewis as Ally Cesarini and Mallory Ramage grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
