Huskies squander 2-0, 3-1 leads
POTSDAM, NY – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 6-4 on Friday at Clarkson. Teydon Trembecky scored twice for the Huskies, but the Golden Knights scored four straight goals to take control. Tech is 4-3 overall and wraps up the New York road trip at St. Lawrence on Saturday.
“When you give up five even-strength goals, you’re not going to win very many games,” Tech coach Bill Muckalt said. “We had an excellent first period and held a 3-1 lead in the second. We made some poor decisions, and they capitalized on them. Credit them. We had some looks in the third but couldn’t find the back of the net.”
The Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Elias Jansson scored his first goal of the season 7:20 into the game when he cleaned up a rebound out front for his 13th career goal. Carson Latimer and Joe Prouty assisted.
Brayden Boehm added to the lead less than 3:00 later when he banged in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Carson Latimer took the initial shot with Elias Jansson also assisting.
Clarkson cut into the lead with 66 seconds left in the first period when Jared Mangan scored from Erik Bargholtz.
Tech regained its two-goal lead 11:39 into the second when Teydon Trembecky scored on a quick faceoff play. Michael Cicek won the offensive zone draw to Isaac Gordon for a one-touch pass to Trembecky.
The Golden Knights took over from there. Shawn O’Donnell made it a one-goal game 1:58 later with a goal from Bryce Sookro and Mael St-denis.
Owen Van Steensel tied the game at 16:53 from Ryan Bottrill and Matthew Mayich.
Owen Van Steensel added a power-play goal 10:29 into the third to give the home team the lead. Tate Taylor and Jared Mangan assisted.
Justin Cote scored 4:02 later for a two-goal lead for Clarkson. Bryce Sookro and Shawn O’Donnell were credited with the assists.
Teydon Trembecky scored his second of the night and team-leading fifth of the season to make it a one-goal game with 3:42 left. On the power play, Stiven Sardarian set up the goal with Reid Andresen adding the second assist.
Tech added the extra attacker but was called for a late penalty and only generated one shot on goal. Erik Bargholtz sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final second.
Clarkson led in shots 31-28. Tech was 1-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The puck drops at 7 p.m. at Appleton Arena against the Skating Saints on Saturday. Lake Superior State and SLU skated to a 3-3 tie on Friday.
