MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This May, the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight is taking an all-female group of veterans to Washington, D.C. Some local artisans are making sure they have a comfortable trip.
A group of quilters has designed and created patriotic lap quilts for every single veteran on the upcoming flight. On April 26 and 27, those quilts will be on display at the Lake Effect Community Art Center in Marnisitque.
Lake Effect Community Arts Board member Katie Birdsley says the exhibition is a beautiful way for the community to show its gratitude for the U.P.’s female veterans.
“We know how much work the ladies put into their service, and we want to show the same appreciation,” said Birdsley. “We’re so glad they can do an all-female Honor Flight, and there are such a wide variety of quilts. There’s so many and they’re so beautiful. You can tell these ladies worked really hard to provide these gifts for them as well.”
The quilt exhibition will run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, and from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Also on Saturday, one local veteran will be presented with a quilt of valor at 2:30 p.m.
