The Associated Students of NMU holds transfer of power amidst university changes

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Associated Students of Northern Michigan University, also known as ASNMU, held their power transfer to a new student body government. It marked the first day of new ASNMU President Cassidy Gibson’s first term. She serves alongside Vice President Seanna Stine who during the election cycle were opposite running mates.

Gibson says that despite this, their goals for the university are similar, and both wish to continue carrying the momentum of the previous term. The organization recently won the NMU Student Organization of the Year Award for its positive impact around campus. Gibson says she hopes to strengthen the bond between students, faculty and ASNMU during her time as president.

“Miss Stine and I’s goals are to make ASNMU more transparent to students and to strengthen the connection that we have with administration. We want to make sure that student voices are a part of the conversation that is happening and the decisions made on campus.”

Part of that connection with administration is with the university’s president, Brock Tessman, who recently announced his departure for a new role at Montana State University. As the student body government for Northern Michigan University, ASNMU has a role to play in the selection of NMU’s next president.

“We’ll get to be a part of that search in some way or another. I think we’re definitely looking for someone similar to Brock in that they are very involved in student life, they care about students, they’re visible to students, and I think wherever they land on many things, that is going to be an important part of things,” says Gibson.

The changing of the guard at ASNMU hasn’t halted their work around campus either. The new student body government will continue its work at its next meeting on Thursday, April 24. For more information on ASNMU, click here.
