Lawmakers return to Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan’s House of Representatives met today for the first time after a two-week spring break. The lawmakers are jumping back into work on road, education, and pubic safety legislation.

One of the lawmakers’ priorities now that their back is finishing work on a package of education bills they hope will help both students and teachers and follow through on plans to create a dedicated public safety fund. House Republicans discussed those bills today, emphasizing that while they know the budget will need to be downsized, they want to make sure counties are rewarded for keeping their streets safe.

Over the break, the speaker of the house took a trip to Washington, D.C., with Governor Whitmer. He said he’s excited to focus on federal investments in Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

“This is very important to our economy. We’re not just an automotive state; we have a lot of things, and one of the things that’s really important is our defense sector.” He said. “I think it says a lot about how much he cares about Michigan. It also says a lot about the relationships that we have with his administration.”

He said President Trump engaged with many of their requests, including the help needed to keep invasive carp out of the Great Lakes and federal assistance following the recent storms in northern Michigan.

The Senate has yet to return from its three-week break but is scheduled back on Wednesday. The House of Representatives is scheduled to meet regularly through the end of June.
